March 2001 As an alternative to the successful annual Golf Day run by the SMART group, it was decided to arrange a Go-Karting Day.
![]() The day began with a light lunch in Deer Park Country followed by a short trip to Livingston to begin the grueling 3hr endurance race. Ten teams of five drivers were kitted out to look like David Coultard before participating in a practice session. The race was most definitely an endurance race with drivers needing a rest after about fifteen minutes. The pit stops to change drivers created opportunities to gain time and spaces as did the numerous collisions. One of the V-Tech teams quickly took the lead, which they retained throughout the race although the Speedline team gave them a good run for their money. There were a few good bumps spins and some underhanded tactics, but it was all in good fun, only people's pride being hurt. The race between the last few teams was also fiercely fought, as nobody wanted to come in last.
![]() We returned to Deer Park for the award ceremony and high tea where Jill Robertson presented the winner's trophy to the V-Tech team and each driver received a watch. Speedline, the runners up, received a bottle of whiskey to drown their sorrows and Ronnie Hetman of V-Tech was unanimously voted worst driver and received a radio-controlled car to practice with prior to the next year's race. The SMART group team not wanting to win the trophy themselves came in a respectable seventh. The evening was wrapped up with some refreshments and ten-pin bowling.

The day was a great success thanks to the companies who sponsored the event, DKL metals, Indium, Multicore, PMJ, Siemens, Speedline, V-Tech and to all those who participated. It is planned to hold the event again next spring when V-Tech will have the opportunity to defend their title.
