SMART Group Ireland “New Product Introduction Seminar and Exhibition”
15th May Shannon, Ireland

The annual seminar took place on Thursday 15th May in Shannon and focused on NPI in today's business environment. The seminar offered a unique view of the issues relating to the setting up of an NPI function, including cost reduction, the complexities of managing the operations and comparison of approaches from both an OEM and CEM perspective. Philip O'Rourke - SMART Ireland Chairman welcomed attendees, speakers and exhibitors on behalf of the SMART Group and chaired the days proceedings. Pdf versions of the papers where available to download

Joe Borinski – Quality Manager, 3Com Ireland started the days talks with a paper on "NPI in Manufacturing". Joe discussed the perspectives, approaches, techniques and experiences of practitioners in a typical electronics manufacturing multinational OEM company.

Following Joe, Martin Walley – Engineering Manager, Sanmina SCI presented a paper "Test Considerations for NPI" encompassing DFT, test strategies and development requirements in relation to the NPI process. Martin also approached the previous discussion with a comparative reference from a CEM point of view.

Louis Leahy – Consultant, Outsource Europe discussed "NPI and New Product Transfer". Louis addressed the importance of focussed processes and teamwork between internal departments and Customers through every phase of NPI/NPT.

After lunch Peter Grundy – Business Development Manager, Siemens presented a very detailed and informative paper on "How NPI affects Production and Vice Versa" Peter presented discussed the importance of an organised and planned NPI approach with a very rapid time-to-market and minimal time lost to experimentation with production processes on line.

Final speaker of the day, Andrew Clarke – European Business Manager, AIM Solder presented his paper on "Optoelectronics Soldering Materials Considerations". Andrew discussed the solder materials considerations in respect to the merging electronics & photonics.

After the presentations, an Q&A session soon emerged with topics from the day being reviewed and many of the attendees taking advantage of the prestigious speakers experience to discuss the Lead Free issues. From the interest of these discussions I'm very sure that SMART Group Ireland will very soon provide another Lead Free seminar in the near future.

A big thank you to all those who attended and the support of the exhibitors and of course finally the speakers who really excelled.
