SMART Fellows 2000
The SMART Fellowships were first announced at The European Surface Mount Conference in Brighton in 1998. SMART Fellowships are awarded to individuals to "thank them for their active participation in the furtherance of the aims of The SMART Group" during the year. The list includes committee members, supporters and sponsors, people who have helped the Group through the media, and those who are aiding the electronics manufacturing industry. The list also includes SMART members who are regular attendees or extraordinary contributors to the association's seminars, forums and events.

SMART Fellows are nominated by members from all The SMART committees, and then elected by The Directors of the Group. They are awarded annually.

The list for the 2000 year is:

  • Gerry Andrews - MARCONI
  • Marian Duff - The SMART Group, Scotland
  • Chris May - PEARPOINT LTD
  • Liam McCauley - ELECTRONICS MANUFACTURING PRODUCTS
  • Philip O'Rourke - BETA ELECTRONICS LTD
  • Dr Wallace Rubin
  • Angus Westwater - ROHM ELECTRONICS UK LTD
  • Alan Whitcroft - NORTEL NETWORKS
Perhaps some short notes are in order. Amongst their other activities, Gerry is a contributor to SMART lead-free proceedings, Marian is the retired Secretary of SMART Scotland, Chris is a participant, Liam (as a magazine publisher) is a long-term SMART supporter, Philip is Chairman of SMART Scotland, Angus and Alan are members of SMART committees in the UK and Ireland respectively. Wally Rubin, as chief chemist of Multicore, was a pioneer of soldering technology and a recognised contributor to industry standardisation through bodies such as the IPC. Now retired, Wally is still active in the industry through smart-e-link and his other contacts, and joined us at the Conference last month.
