This month Engineering Spotlight falls on Alan Brewin who has been working recently with the laminate issues for lead-free. Alan also presents the Lead-Free Technology Master Classes for NPL. Alan is coordinating the Lead Free Technical Presentations at the Experience in Brighton with Sue Knight or Sanmina-SCI and from Stephen Mainwering of Solectron see www.smartgroup.org/pdf/experience2003.pdf

After study at Norwich and Massachusetts, focussed on Physical Chemistry, Alan graduated and joined the Concoat team in Camberley, Surrey. Involved in product development over the five years prior to arrival at NPL he has built up a considerable reputation within the industry through his customer support work, committee work at IPC and IAG meetings, SIR testing developments and conference presentations.

Alan is the main point of contact for consultancy and test work for the EI group, and manages DTI and industry funded projects in the following areas:

• Process validation using SIR
• Use of ion chromatography for PCA analysis
• Impact of Lead-Free processing on cleaning
• Updating test fluxes and equipment for solderability measurements CAF Susceptibility of PCA substrates Dispensing of electronic materials Tack testing of solder pastes and adhesives
